Located in a renovated 250-year-old sake brewery, Onigiri Yamasai serves rice balls made with locally grown Yamagata rice, such as “Yume Gokochi.” Their rice balls are specially crafted to taste just as good cold, making them perfect for takeout. Popular varieties include Yonezawa Beef Soboro, Sukitama, and Grilled Salted Masu. Be sure to try the “Chieko Miso” (¥300), a traditional preserved food recipe passed down through generations. This is the perfect spot for a quick, delicious snack while exploring the area.

Visitors can sample wines by the glass while  learning about the region’s winemaking traditions,  making it a great spot for both wine enthusiasts and travelers looking for unique souvenirs. Try the “Tasting Set” (¥1,100 for 3 wines) for a quick and enjoyable wine tasting experience.

Kotaki Soba Yukariya

 

Kodaki Soba Yukariya is a beloved local soba restaurant known for its handmade soba noodles made from locally sourced “Dewa Kaori” buckwheat. Established in 2004, this restaurant is housed in a renovated 90-year-old farmhouse, where husband-and-wife team, Toshiaki and Yuka Dan, serve traditional Yamagata soba dishes. A must-try is the “Itasoba” (¥850), served on a wooden board, and the “Furuppa Soba” (¥750), made with tender chicken. Pair your meal with the local favorite “Geso-ten” (¥300) and “Chikuwa-ten” (¥300) for an authentic Yamagata meal.
