Things to do in Japan: November 2026

Oct. 29. 2026

It’s finally starting to feel like sweater weather in Japan! With cooler air and leaves beginning to change color, there’s plenty to look forward to this November, including illuminated gardens, special seasonal openings, and cultural events. Here are some events we’ve already added to our calendar, and think you should, too!

Tokyo

Possibility of NIHONBUYO vol.8

Discover the possibilities of NIHONBUYO under artistic director Rankoh Fujima. This two-part performance explores the history of Moji, a historic port district, with a stage featuring traditional Kokura-ori textiles. The second part, ADAYOJIN, reimagines Beaumarchais’s The Barber of Seville, famously adapted into an opera by Rossini, as an Edo-period comedy of romance and clever schemes. Performed by Goyokai, five dancers from different schools, each awarded Japan’s Medal with Purple Ribbon, it reveals a surprisingly playful side of NIHONBUYO.

Koishikawa Kōrakuen Autumn Illumination

Dating back to 1629, Koishikawa Kōrakuen is one of Tokyo’s historic Japanese gardens. This November, see its centuries-old landscape in a different light during a special evening opening. Illuminations highlight the historic garden’s island, pine trees, and ornate Karamon gate, while projection mapping brings autumn scenery and images of Edo-period life to its bridge and garden wall. Complete your evening stroll with food-truck offerings or a matcha and Japanese sweet set at the garden’s nighttime teahouse.
