Summer has arrived in Japan, bringing with it a calendar full of festivals, fireworks, cultural celebrations, and seasonal events. Tokyo

 

MOMAT Summer Festival 2026

 

 

The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo celebrates summer with a seasonal program featuring a collection tour, talks and lectures, and other limited-time events. On Friday and Saturday evenings, visitors can also enjoy extended museum hours, offering the chance to explore the galleries after dark. Food trucks will also be stationed outside the museum, where visitors can grab a bite before or after exploring the galleries, making for an enjoyable summer evening in Tokyo.

Kagurazaka Festival 2026

 

 

One of Tokyo’s most beloved neighborhood festivals, the Kagurazaka Festival transforms the charming streets of Kagurazaka into a lively celebration of local culture.

 

 

The festival features the vibrant Hozuki (Japanese lantern plant) Market hosted by Bishamonten Zenkokuji Temple, followed by the popular Awa Odori dance festival, where energetic dance groups parade through the historic district. If you’re visiting Tokyo in late July, it’s a great opportunity to experience a traditional summer festival beyond the city’s larger celebrations.

Yokohama

 

 

Yokohama Tanabata Festival 2026

 

Set against the backdrop of Yokohama’s iconic Minato Mirai skyline, the Yokohama Tanabata Festival brings traditional Tanabata celebrations to the city’s waterfront. Held at Rinko Park, the festival features colorful bamboo decorations, stage performances, cultural workshops, food vendors, and evening illuminations, making it a wonderful place to spend a summer evening.

Kyoto

 

Gion Festival

 

 

With a history spanning over 1,000 years, Gion Festival is one of Japan’s most iconic summer festivals. Held throughout July, the festival is best known for its magnificent Yamaboko float processions on July 17 and 24, as well as the festive Yoiyama evenings leading up to each procession, when the streets come alive with food stalls, traditional music, and illuminated floats. As one of Kyoto’s most popular annual events, expect large crowds and hot summer weather, and be sure to stay hydrated during your visit!

Hokkaido

 

Niseko Jazz Festival

 

 

Set against the scenic backdrop of Hokkaido’s mountains, the Niseko Jazz Festival brings together acclaimed musicians from Japan and abroad for a weekend of live performances. Daytime performances are held at NEST813, a mountaintop venue accessible by gondola, where live jazz is accompanied by panoramic views of Mount Yotei. Evening concerts continue at Setsu Niseko, allowing visitors to enjoy music in two distinctly different settings over the course of the festival.

Ise Shrine Dedication Fireworks Festival

 

 

One of Japan’s three major competitive fireworks festivals, the Ise Shrine Dedication Fireworks Festival sees fireworks artisans from across the country gather in Ise to present their finest works as offerings to Ise Grand Shrine. Held along the Miyagawa River, the event is celebrated for its exceptional craftsmanship and spectacular summer displays. With free public viewing areas available, it’s a wonderful opportunity to experience one of Japan’s most prestigious fireworks events.
