1. A Legacy in Every Sip: The History of C ...
- Jan. 16. 2025
Every spring, Kyoto transforms into a realm of enchantment. One of the highlights of the season is the renowned Miyako Odori dance performance. With over 150 performances in its history, this cherished tradition offers a rare opportunity to experience the artistry of Kyoto’s geikos and maikos (apprentice geikos) in a grand theatrical setting. After years of hoping to see it in person, I finally saw it for myself this spring.
Miyako Odori takes place at the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo Theatre, a historic venue beautifully renovated in 2023. From the moment I stepped inside, I was enveloped in its refined atmosphere, setting the perfect stage for the captivating performance ahead.
As the curtain rose, I was transported into a world of elegance and tradition. The geikos and maikos, adorned in exquisite pale blue-green kimonos—custom-made for each year’s performance—moved with effortless grace. This year’s theme, “Miyako no Fuzei Shiki no Irodori” (The Colors of Kyoto’s Seasonal Elegance), unfolded through eight captivating scenes, each inspired by Kyoto’s iconic landmarks and classical literature.
The performance began with the rhythmic chant of “Miyako odori wa Yo-i Yasaa-”, marking the start of an enchanting journey through the four seasons of Japan. As I watched the dancers, time seemed to slip away–I found myself immersed in Kyoto’s rich history brought to life by each elegant movement.
Among the many beautiful moments, the grand finale was the most unforgettable. Set against the backdrop of cherry blossoms in full bloom at Heian Shrine, 50 geikos and maikos danced in perfect harmony, creating a mesmerizing spectacle that embodied the essence of Kyoto’s springtime beauty. The entire stage glowed with soft pink hues, and the vibrant costumes shimmered under the lights, creating the illusion that the entire venue was bathed in cherry blossoms—a scene straight out of a dream.
Traditionally, Gion’s tea houses have a strict “no first-time visitors” policy, making it difficult for outsiders to witness authentic geiko and maiko performances. However, Miyako Odori offers a rare chance for anyone to experience this refined art form up close.
Before the performance, guests can enjoy a tea ceremony, where a geiko skillfully prepares matcha, accompanied by delicate wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets). It’s a wonderful opportunity to experience the elegance of Kyoto’s tea culture. (Note: The tea ceremony requires a reservation.)
